Established in 1985, the IM&MF (formerly the ISEM&MF) was located at the Yerkes Primate Center, then moved to the Department of Chemistry in June 1997. The unique microscopy at IM&MF was developed by Dr. Robert P. Apkarian, director of the facility, and provides both research and service imaging.
In addition to the microscopy services for Chemistry programs, this center serves as a molecular imaging facility for investigators from Emory School of Medicine, Winship Cancer Institute, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, and American Cardiovascular Research Institute. Regional and University wide collaborations are welcomed.
Concerted efforts have been made by our lab, in the last 20 years, to push the resolution limits of secondary electron imaging on biological and biomaterial samples to a single nanometer.
Ultrathin metal films of chromium and cryo-immobilization via high pressure freezing provide bulk macromolecular and cell suspensions for low temperature imaging (cryo-etch HRSEM).
Transmission EM studies employ methods that include immunocytochemistry of embedded sectioned material and
single particle imaging on the nano and macromolecular level. Cryo-TEM has been recently added.
